Privacy Policy
Tides - Tide Times
The short version
- We (Scribbaware) do not collect, store or sell any personal data.
- Tide data comes from Open-Meteo.com. To get tides for a place, the app sends that place’s coordinates to Open-Meteo over a secure (HTTPS) connection. These coordinates may be based on your current location.
- Your location is never sent to us, and never used for anything other than showing tides.
- No ads, no analytics, no tracking and no third-party SDKs.
This Privacy Policy explains how the Tides - Tide Times app (“the app”), developed by Scribbaware (“we”, “us”), handles information. By using the app you agree to this policy. If you have any questions, contact us at info@scribbaware.com.
1. Information we collect
We do not collect any personal information or usage data. The app has no user accounts, and we do not operate any server that receives data from the app. We never see who you are, where you are, or how you use the app.
The only information that leaves your device is the request for tide data sent directly to our tide data provider, Open-Meteo, as described in section 3.
2. Location data
If you grant location permission, the app uses your device’s location to show tide information for where you are. To do this, the app may send geographic coordinates based on your location to Open-Meteo (see section 3). Your location:
- is only used to retrieve and show tide data;
- is never sent to us (Scribbaware) or to any party other than Open-Meteo;
- is not linked to your name, account or any other identifier by us;
- is not used for advertising, profiling or any other purpose.
Granting location permission is up to you. You can revoke it at any time in your device settings.
3. Tide data from Open-Meteo
Tide data is provided by Open-Meteo.com. To show tide times, the app requests data from Open-Meteo’s API directly from your device. Each request contains the geographic coordinates (latitude and longitude) of the place you want tides for, which may be based on your current location. Requests do not contain your name, an account, an advertising ID or any other personal identifier.
As with any internet request, Open-Meteo’s servers receive your device’s IP address. According to Open-Meteo’s terms and privacy policy, they may process IP addresses for technical reasons such as server maintenance and preventing misuse, without linking them to user identities. They also keep web server log files for troubleshooting, which may include the requested coordinates, and delete them after 90 days. Open-Meteo states that it does not share this data with third parties.
We (Scribbaware) do not receive or have access to any of this information. Open-Meteo processes it under its own terms and privacy policy.
4. Data stored on your device
The app may store your preferences (such as selected stations and settings) and downloaded tide data locally on your device, so the app works quickly and remembers your choices. This data never leaves your device and is not accessible to us. It is deleted when you clear the app’s data or uninstall the app.
5. Data sharing and selling
We do not collect any data, so we have nothing to share. We do not share, sell, rent, trade or otherwise disclose any user data to third parties. The only data that leaves your device is the tide data request sent directly to Open-Meteo, which is needed for the app to work (see section 3).
6. Advertising, analytics and tracking
The app contains no advertising, no analytics tools, no crash-reporting services and no other third-party SDKs that collect data. We do not use cookies, tracking pixels, advertising IDs or any other tracking technology.
7. Data retention and deletion
We do not retain any user data, because we do not collect any. Data stored locally by the app (see section 4) remains under your control and can be deleted at any time by clearing the app’s data in your device settings or by uninstalling the app.
Open-Meteo’s server logs, which may contain your IP address and the requested coordinates, are deleted by Open-Meteo after 90 days, according to their terms (see section 3).
8. Security
All communication between the app and Open-Meteo uses encrypted HTTPS connections. Data stored on your device is kept in the app’s private storage, which other apps cannot access.
9. Permissions
- Location: used only to show tide data for your location (see section 2).
- Internet access: used only to download tide data from Open-Meteo.
10. Children’s privacy
The app is not directed at children under the age of 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from anyone, including children. If you believe a child has provided us with personal information, please contact us and we will make sure it is deleted.
11. Your rights
Depending on where you live (for example under the GDPR in the European Union), you may have rights to access, correct or delete your personal data. Since we do not collect or hold any personal data about you, there is no data for us to provide, correct or delete. You are always welcome to contact us with any privacy question.
12. Changes to this Privacy Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time, for example when the app gains new features. Any changes will be published on this page with an updated “Last updated” date. If a change significantly affects how the app handles data, we will mention it in the app’s release notes.
